Perched on the outermost rock of the Open Circle Viewpoint, this Great Blue Heron was visible from hundreds of yards away. Several birds of this species have visited the park over the years, and some became local characters with nicknames, like the “Oscar” that frequented the park’s grasslands almost daily a few years ago. This bird looks like a different individual from those I’ve seen before. It didn’t stay long. It took off from this rock to the shallows north of the viewpoint, and from there it flew west over the Nature Area and vanished from my view.
