I was walking along on the north side, approaching the lovely little nook where a bench is tucked away beneath two blooming ceanothus and behind a blooming rock rose, when I heard a bit of a noodling tune on a mandolin. That turned out to come from Steve Beigel, a long time Berkeley resident, and his beautiful mandolin. Steve plays with friends and admires the mandolin performers who play at the Freight and Salvage. Just for the heck of it, he played this traditional Irish tune for the camera. When you listen please remember that it was not recorded in a studio but in the open air with the wind blowing and people walking past. That’s part of the charm of Cesar Chavez Park. You never know when a musician might be lurking in the blooming bushes somewhere.
