A Question Answered

The Great Egret is with the Great Blue Heron the largest carnivorous bird in the park.  If you questioned whether it was large enough, or had an appetite for, the ground squirrels that romp abundantly on the park’s borders, this picture is the answer.  Here two ground squirrels are taking the sun mere inches from a Great Egret.  They’re on the rocks below the Open Circle viewpoint near the northeast corner of the park.  Bird and rodents ignored one another until some better notion occurred to the bird and it flew off.
