Moon in Eclipse

Moon about half obscured, 4:38 a.m.
Moon in full eclipse at 5:03 a.m.

I could have shot these pictures from my driveway.  But where would be the thrill in that?  So I got up at a few minutes to 4 a.m., drove to the park, climbed up a hill in the dark, and set up the camera there.  I wasn’t the only lunatic who picked the park for their moon photography.  One party even brought a neon-lit drone.  Thankfully, it didn’t stay up long.  Even without the drone, shooting at night presented a challenge.  So long as part of the moon was still bright, it was easy to find and focus.  Once the earth’s shadow blotted out the whole lunar disk, it presented too little contrast for the camera to locate and lock focus.  Well, the results won’t win any photography prizes, but I don’t regret going.
