Close Encounter


I was walking north on a narrow path on the west side when I saw something black and white moving south toward me maybe forty feet away on the same trail. This was not a dog. I halted and set up my tripod. The animal came toward me on short legs at a rapid clip.  It had two bright stripes the length of its back and a long bushy tail.  When it got about ten feet from me I started to worry.  This encounter could go very wrong!  However, the skunk — the biggest one I’ve seen — simply turned around, kept its tail down, reversed course, and disappeared in the heavy grasses.   I’ve smelled skunk in the park once or twice but never saw one here before.  Obviously it was thriving — great shiny and bushy long hair, large size, rapid movement.  Here’s a very short video of the encounter:
